Destroying three myths on Cybersecurity

Since the dawn of the internet, cybersecurity has been a major priority, especially in the surveillance sector. Although there is a wealth of information circulating on this topic, it can be easy to come across false information. Read below as we destroy three popular cybersecurity myths!

1. Cybersecurity is only a defense mechanism.

This is one of the most pervasive myths out there, but don’t be fooled! Cybersecurity is so much more than a defense mechanism. It is especially important that proactive measures are taken so that fewer breaches occur in the first place. Securing your surveillance system is a matter of knowing whether your products and services contain built-in features that prevent future incidents. Michael Currie, the Principal Security Engineer for Pelco by Schneider Electric, says that when it comes to effective cybersecurity measures, “diligence and proactivity” is key. He adds that Pelco’s mission is to build security measures into solutions so that certain vulnerabilities are managed before they are deployed into their respective markets. “We’re process oriented. One of our major goals is to avoid situations where security issues are discovered after the fact.”

2. Cybersecurity is just an IT issue.

Keeping your business or organization safe from cyber-attacks isn’t just an IT-based responsibility. It should also be a priority for anyone who is associated with business assets. “No matter where you are in the world, businesses need to make sure that appropriate roles and privileges are being assigned, sensitive information is not disseminated, and that these priorities are maintained regardless of vertical or the departments within them,” Currie says. By leaving the bulk of cybersecurity duties to the IT department, other departments become neglected and therefore vulnerable to security threats. It benefits the entire business when a diverse range of authorized employees have a working knowledge of cybersecurity procedures.

3. The life cycle of security products doesn’t matter.

Keeping the life cycle of your security products in order is one of the most important tasks a surveillance company can do to ensure their products and services maintain a desired level of cybersecurity protection. “As part of that lifecycle, the ongoing security posture of a system must be measured, assessed, and reported upon,” Currie says. “We have to make sure that the system fits within the boundaries of acceptable risk over time.”

Keeping your Business Safe

Cybersecurity can be a complicated topic to navigate, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Your business deserves to keep its information safe from security breaches, and you can count on Pelco to consistently deliver effective surveillance solutions.
